GATECRASHER TALKS! is a series of talks presented by Ms. Smith especially focused on the needs of beginner writers and/or otherwise talented and experienced writers who are struggling to access the competitive U.S. publishing market. These talks are most beneficial to writers who dream of breaking out in the U.S. publishing market but don’t have an M.F.A. in Creative Writing degree and feel left out by literary “snobs” who ignore or dismiss their works because the literary elite may perceive their writing as those of “outsiders.”

GATECRASHER TALKS! was inspired by the title of Ms. Smith’s essay, Gatekeepers and Gatecrashers in Contemporary American Poetry: Reflections of a Filipino Immigrant Poet in the United States, that appears in Black Lawrence Press’ 2015 anthology, OTHERS WILL ENTER THE GATES: Immigrant Poets on Poetry, Influences, and Writing in America. In these presentations, Ms. Smith shares the specific techniques she developed and used to break out–indeed, GATECRASH!–into the ultra competitive U.S. writing and publishing world that seemed to have transformed her overnight from a literary non-personality to an acknowledged “emerging writer” featured in many author events sponsored by major libraries and civic organizations, winning literary contests, and being offered publishing contracts!

Ms. Smith may be booked for a GATECRASHER TALK under the following terms:

  • Host/sponsor provides adequate and appropriate travel and board arrangements, and when necessary, adequate and appropriate lodging accommodations.
  • Host/sponsor allows sale of Ms. Smith’s books and other works at the event.
  • Host/sponsor pays Ms. Smith a presentor’s honorarium in an amount available upon query, negotiable for non-profits and/or charitable projects, upon request.
